This pirate would like to talk to you for a moment about mental health. I’ve been noticing a lot of people reclaiming parts of their lives in the preservation of their mental health, and I’d like to tell you…I think that’s fantastic.
At its core, these people are pushing back and reclaiming their lives and their sanity because, after 15 months of living one way, they’re faced with having to go back to the old ways of thinking. It’s a little Ironic that a once in a lifetime situation that appeared to slow our progress in many ways, set us up to propel us forward in ways we could not have foreseen. The trouble is…the folks who run things aren’t ready. They don’t want this new world we’re living in, they want the old one where we are compliant. We don’t ask questions. We do what we told.
As you can imagine, this pirate isn’t a fan of being told what to do, and he’s less of a fan of being told what to do by people who can’t read the room.
My ancestors left their homes and went to create a new one in a new place, and with new rules. You could make the argument that they made the first independent fully functioning democracy in the Western Hemisphere. Sure it was a square peg in the round hole of what passed for society at the time, but it worked. Until society figured out how to infiltrate it and pick off the weaker of them, reeducate them, convince them that the old way of doing things was better, and then send them back to destroy that new world from within.
Of course, that could NEVER happen now, right? We’re so much farther advanced than our ancestors, right?
Of course not. Human nature abhors uncertainty, and jumping into a new world requires it. On the other hand, the status quo offers security, comfort, and the nicest jeweled golden handcuffs you could ever find on the market. So it’s easy for the opposition to look around and find the weaker members of the party to ply them, and wouldn’t you know it, those once supposed staunch supporters of the new world will fall all over themselves trying to get back to those golden handcuffs, never once thinking that the way out isn’t backward, it’s through.
This is the way of things, ever since Dathan wanted everyone to go back to Egypt. It’s the act of selfish and cowardly people who don’t want to be burdened.
So what I want to know, is why should my peace of mind, my sanity…my ship…be in the hands of fools like that? Why should yours?
Sail.
